Bahia Bustamante and Trelew

  Trelew is a small city in Northern Patagonia most known for being close to the location where the fossil for the biggest dinosaur on earth (an herbivore) has been found. Accordingly, we went to the paleontology museum to learn about the evolution of geography and animals in the region. The area is also known for the large number of Welsh settlers so we made sure to enjoy a traditional tea service while in towns as well. The highlight however was Bahia Bustamante, a small camp on the ocean with acres and acres of Patagonian steppe as the backyard. Touted as the Galapagos of Argentina, it was chalk full of land and sea creatures. Highlights included an Peludo (hairy armadillo) we nicknamed Amaretto, lots of leaping guanacos and running rheas, bouncing maras, sunning sea lions and others.  The most spectacular however were the Magellenic penguins who were nesting on a nearby island. And we’re off! (And AR wins the World Cup)

  We’ve made it! After far too many hours on airplanes we have arrived in South America to begin our adventure. Seems so surreal but we are ready to get this adventure underway. In an attempt to travel light, we’ve packed everything for 3 months in 3 backpacks: Sunny “agreed” to do the heavy lifting since I (Becky) did all the planning. A match made in heaven! On our way to country #1, Argentina, we had an extended layover in Brazil, so got a sneak preview of some favorite treats like brigaderous, pao do queijo, and others. We’re excited to come back here further into the trip to delight our tastebuds! We met up with Becky’s parents in Buenos Aires shortly after and did a bit of touring, including a theater turned library and an ancient tree in the city park. We will be back in this city but continued on to Patagonia, specifically a resort called Bahia Bustamante. This resort is a nature lover’s paradise on the crystal blue ocean in northern Patagonia.
